Born in Madrid, Spain, Dr. Moisés Ruiz de Gauna has established his career performing throughout Europe and North America including Spain, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Germany, and the United States, both as a soloist and collaborative pianist.
He has been described as an artist of extreme sensitivity and excellent technique, capable of achieving both the most delicate and fullest sonorities. His interpretations are meticulous, colorful, and always based on the quality of the sound and the musical content of the harmonies.
Dr. Ruiz de Gauna’s solo repertoire ranges from the exquisite Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, Schubert’s Early and Late Sonatas, Chopin‘s Sonatas and complete “Etudes,” Franz Liszt’s “Sonata in B minor” and complete “Trascendental Etudes,” Brahms Early Sonatas and Late Works, Balakirev’s “Islamey”, Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit,” to Federico Mompou’s rare “12 Preludes” and complete “Música Callada.”
His upcoming repertoire projects include Beethoven’s “32 Sonatas,” Debussy’s “12 Etudes”, Liszt’s “6 Grandes Etudes de Paganini,” and the complete works of Federico Mompou.
Dr. Ruiz de Gauna is very much in demand as a collaborative pianist, chamber musician, and music director. He works as repetiteur and coach at La Musica Lirica, a summer opera program in Novafeltria, Italy. Moreover, he is the Co-founder of the Dúo Galdós with Spanish soprano Sonia Rodríguez Bermejo. This ensemble is dedicated to expand the exposure of Spain’s music, with an emphasis in vocal music. He can been heard performing, among others, the Complete Songs of Isaac Albéniz, Roberto Gerhard’s Op. 1 “L’infantament Meravellós de Schahrazada,” the Complete Songs of Enrique Granados, the Complete Songs of Manuel de Falla, and the Complete Songs of Federico Mompou. As a music director, he has worked for several years at Cincinnati’s Augsburg Lutheran Church.
In addition to his career as a performer, Dr. Ruiz de Gauna has been an active teacher since 1996. He has taught at the prestigious Eastman School of Music as Teaching Assistant of Fernando Laires, and at Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music as Assistant Collaborative Pianist of Kenneth Griffiths. He also maintains a private studio in the Madrid area.
A Fulbright Grant recipient, Dr. Ruiz de Gauna graduated with both Doctorate and Artist Diploma in Piano Performance at the same time, under the guidance of Frank Weinstock. This was an unprecedented event at Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. He received his Master’s in Piano Performance from Eastman School of Music, where Fernando Laires became his mentor. He has studied with András Kemenes and legendary Ferenc Rados at the Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest. In Spain, he has been influenced by pianists José Luis Fajardo, Anatoly Povzoun, and María Gil, and has been awarded with the highest degree and prize possible: “Título Superior de Profesor de Piano” with “Premio de Honor Fin de Carrera.”
Dr. Ruiz de Gauna has received musical advice and training from outstanding artists such as Alicia de Larrocha, Murray Perahia, Phillipe Entremont, Malcom Bilson, Victor Rosenbaum, Alberto Zedda, and Joseph Rescigno.
